Turning
Turning involves the use of a lathe to spin round material at high speeds in order to remove some of the material. A cutting tool is placed parallel to the cutting surface and as the part is rotated waste material is taken off the work piece. The lathe can either be used to reduce the outside diameter of the work piece (turning) or on the inside of the work piece (boring) to produce the finished part.

Lathes can also be used for parting off pieces of a stock work piece by cutting a deep grove in the part. A manual lathe is typically used for low production or prototype work while a CNC lathe is used for high production runs or for repeatable precision.
